NEWISLANDBEATZ Vol. 1 by New Island

While i know neither the name nor the location of the old island, i can tell you this about New Island–the Providence knob twiddler  knows how to knock out beats.  You’ve heard me wax rhapsodic about certain blender beatheads, but NI maintains a nuanced difference–he’s a master at layering.  Blended beats focus on the end game, not the individual components that make it up.  NI displays a jeweler’s finesse, placing soulful samples expertly alongside 808 drum tracks, occasionally dipping his toe into more dub friendly pools.  Blended beats are more focused on coalescing slices into newly formed wholes, calling attention to the forest as opposed to the trees; layered beats take noticeably different sounds and samples, and then figuring out the ideal way to make them fit together without loosing any of their original personality.  Sure the end result is similar, namely new beats, but the approach couldn’t be more different.  Layered beats let you appreciate every addition, whereas blended beats are more about the new, end product.  Let’s call this after school special music.  Not quite turgid enough to count as late night romps, but more than making up for it with old school groovery.  Yes, groovery now is a word.  Just check the New Island dictionary.  No guarantees about Scrabble’s acceptance, though.
